Classroom Updates for Parents!
My name is Mrs. Myers-Jakes, and it is an honor to have the opportunity to teach your precious little ones this 2011-2012 school year!  There is no greater joy for me as a teacher than watching my students grow as I teach them math, science, social studies, and writing. We all know that they learn so much more!

Parents Wednesday, January 18, 2012 is a half-day.  Your child will be dismissed at 11:35 a.m. Parents I would love to conference with the parents that I notified  on Friday, January 13, 2012. I sent notices home with your child.

I will be available between the hours of 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. I look forward to conferencing with you soon as we continue to  develop a  wonderful  rapport and share how we can work together for your child's academic excellence.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel to contact me at myersjm@pwcs.edu. or call Belmont Elementary School at 703-494-4945. I look forward meeting with you very soon!
Sight Words
Hello Parents!  Please  encourage your child to learn and write his  or her sight words daily so that their reading will continue to improve.   As they learn these Sight Words their reading ability will improve. As a suggestion you might want to place about ten Sight Words on index cards and encourage them to learn them for two weeks. Then write the next ten on index cards and have them study them. Continue this process until you have placed all of them on index cards and have given your child two weeks to learn ten Sight Words at a time.  You will see growth  in your child's reading as he or she learns these words.

At this time of year your child should be reading and be familiar with all or most of their sight words. Please read a book, or a page or a chapter in a book before your child does. Then ask your child to read the text that you have read. After your child has read, ask your child questions about the book, chapter, or page that he or she has read. This will help you to support your child with reading comprehension.

Thanks parents for joining with me as we work together towards your child's continual school  successes!
Take Home Reading Books!
Every day your child  will chose 5 books and place them in a plastic bag to take home to read. It is very important that your child reads everyday to ensure that he or she grows in reading.  Your child is required to read for 15 minutes everyday, Monday thru Sunday.  Please encourage your child to read their bagged books everyday. The more they read the more you and I will see their reading abilities soar!  When he or she has read their books the books are then exchanged for more books to take home. Please sign your child's  book log sheet each day.
Math Support for Parents
Hello Parents!
We teach our students the Math Investigations Curriculum. In this Math Curriculum students are taught that there is more than one way to solve a math problems. They are given the opportunity to explain how they solve their math problems. They can use numbers, pictures and words to explain why they feel that their math problems are correct. Students play games which connects to their tasks individually, in partnership or in groups. These games allow for students to learn math strategies in a concrete way, and then transfer that knowledge to their tasks.
Parents there is a Math Handout which is available for you to borrow so that you will be able to learn about the games that your child plays in school.  If you are interested in borrowing the Math Handout, please send a note or e-mail me at myerjm@pwcs.edu. Please remember that these books must be returned before the end of the school year or if you move.
We also focus on traditional math, so each morning for our daily warm-up we practice our math  facts. You can support your child at home by placing math facts up to 20 on index cards and practicing with them at least three times a week ( 5+4, 6+7,10+2 or 8+3).  If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
Support with Writing at Home
We are learning how to choose write folktales. We are creating our own folktales and sharing it with our classmates.  We continue to sketch (drawing part of a picture to remind us of our topic), and then writing about our topic. We are learning that a sentence always begins with a capital letter, it must always make sense, and it must always end with a period, question mark, or an exclamation mark.  They are learning how to be careful and edit their writing  to make it better.
